We collaborated with interior design studio Yabu Pushelberg on this stunning Mondrian-inspired serpentine staircase to anchor the Four Seasons’ impressive marble lobby and carry its guests to the conference and banquet facilities above. Our role was to take a preliminary concept and develop design geometry and engineering specifics to accomodate a tight physical space while adhering to a short schedule and limited budget. In this case, the staircase was fabricated elsewhere. Our challenge was to set this large suspended staircase into a narrow portion of the hotel lobby while protecting its sculptural presence and appearance from both inside the hotel and from the outside courtyard. The breathtaking, 24-foot-high staircase resembles water flowing down a rolling hillside. Light and time of day constantly play with the multi-layer guardrail and offer an ever-changing perspective for visitors ascending or descending the staircase. In fact, the performing artist Chance the Rapper was inspired to feature the staircase in a music video, which you can find below.
