The New Zealand architecture firm Fearon Hay re-designed the inside of this traditional loft to preserve the wide-open feel of the original floor plan while still providing privacy and distinct living spaces for the family of four. Their design called for extensive custom metal fabrication using blackened stainless steel and architectural glass throughout the home, and they called us in to help. We created the most significant addition to the apartment – two elevated, soundproof, glass-enclosed rooms for the children. Our other work included a raised metal platform that allows each room’s furniture to be mechanically raised and lowered as needed; a concealed ceiling track to guide curtains along the interior of the tempered glass to offer privacy as desired; custom radiator housing that doubles as shelving; hand-patinated blackened stainless steel throughout the house and a 1,000-pound glass door that closes off the master bedroom hallway. In the kitchen, we fabricated the polished stainless steel for the cooking island and cabinetry, as well as a custom-designed library ladder that provides easy access to the higher shelves. We also designed the ladder, wall door system and custom metal furniture in the study.
